  1. List and briefly describe the five most common types of personal computers.
  2. Define operating systems. Compare two paid operating systems commonly used by individuals.
  3. What is microprocessor? Briefly describe two basic components of central processing unit (CPU).
  4. What are the characteristics of secondary storage? Briefly describe them.
  5. What is solid-state storage? Briefly describe two types of solid state device.

Question 1:

(i) desktop :- A desktop is a personal computer designed to operate tasks at a single location. A desktop computer has monitor, cpu , keyboard, mouse and other additional accessories.

(ii) Notebook:- Notebook computer is a portable computer where display , mouse and other required accessories are attached to itself like a briefcase.

(iii) netbook :- It is smaller version of notebook computers whose processing power is less than notebook. The design is very similar to notebook but it is smaller in size than notebook .It is designed to surf internet and connect to wifi networks.

(iv) Tablet:- It is a kind of mobile computer which has touchscreen and pen enabled screen. It is smaller than notebook but larger in size than mobile phones. It has a good capacity processors to perform daily needs activities.

(v) PDA:- personal digital assistant computer also comes in the category of personal computers. It is used to keep contacts details, calculator, digital calendar , games etc.

Question 3:

A microprocessor is an integrated circuit that incorporates the functioning of cpu's . It executes and manages the core logical function inside it.

Two components of cpu:-

(i)ALU( Arithmetic logic unit) It is divided into two category arithmetic unit and other is logical unit. Arithmetic unit take care of all mathematic operations such as addition etc. while logical unit perfom logical operation such AND, OR etc between input provided.

(ii) control unit:-

Control unit is known as the heart of cpu. It directs the operation of processor. It tells the components how to respond and when to respond through instructions. A control unit first gets information then it converts into control signals before sending to processor. All in one you can say that it has control over all core components of CPU.

Question 4:

Characteristics of secondary storage:-

(i) Non volatile in nature:- Data can be stored permanently.

(ii) It has high capacitive storage:- Storage capacity 1TB, 2TB etc.

(iii) It can be portable. e.g external hard disk

(iv) It is durable in nature:- It is long lasting to use.

(v) It maintains high consistency:- Data kept in hard drives are same even after long time.

Question 5:

SSD(solid state storage) is a kind of non volatile storage system which uses only electronic circuits for its functioning. SSD's are much faster than optical hard drives. It comes in many types, sizes and interfacing options.

Types of ssd:-

(i) SATA SSD:- It is the very first generation of SSD. It has a maximum read speed of 570 MB per second. The computer boot up time with SATA SSD is 15 second.

(ii) NVMe SSD:- It has a read speed of 2600MB/SEC. It is costier than SATA SSD and it is the next generation of SATA SSD.
