1.Can protocols be proprietary? What are the consequences of that?

Answer #1

Yes, protocols can be proprietary. It can be defined as the protocols which are owned by only one single company or person. For example, skype protocol is owned by Microsoft corporations.

The consequences are the following:

(i) There will be a huge amount of licensing fee for that protocol.

(ii) There will be no freedom of choice for the customers as the protocol is owned by one single vendor. So, they must buy from that vendor only when that protocol is required.

(iii) The tools and upgrades are custom. So, any problem can be resolved by that specific vendor only.

(iv) It will resolve the problem of compatibility issues.
