In UNIX, shell is like a DOS to the Windows. Shell is used as an intermediatery between Operating System and user. One of the main task of shell is to debug the code written in your scripts. Suppose you have written some commands under a script in UNIX. When you execute this script, shell assumes as these commands are written directly in command line and execute them.

Shells acts as an intermediatery between OS and user. It hides the underlying details of operating system and manages the kernel (part of OS).
