Convoy effect in process scheduling refers to phenomenon in which one slow process leads to slow down of system of processes.

It occurs in First Come First Serve scheduling algorithm. It is non-preemptive scheduling in which processor is allocated on the order in which processes arrive and if a CPU intensive process is assigned the process. It slows down all the processes after it lead them to wait for long to get executed.

This situation is similar to traffic and known as Convoy effect.
