What is Power planning?

  • In computer networking, power planning is nothing but a step in which a power grid network is created to distribute the power to each and every part.
  • Generally is done with floorplanning.
  • Power planning can be done manually also.
  • It deals with the distribution of networks to each and every part.
  • In Power planning, there are three levels:
  1. Rings: This level carries VDD and VSS around the chip
  2. Stripes: Stripes carries VDD and VSS from Rings across the chip
  3. Rails: Rails used to connect VDD and VSS to the standard cell.
  • In power planning, initially, the power dissipation is calculated using a tool or rough calculations
  • Based on ring width, strap width, and no. of horizontal straps, etc.
  • Straps are also used to distribute the power inside the core area
