What is the minimum link delay for a 2.5MB packet sent from Jacksonville to New York (1000 miles) over a 100Mbps fiber link

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Packet Size (L)= 2.5 MB = 2. 5 x 220 x 8 bits

Distance (D) = 1000 miles = 1000 X 1609.34 = 1609.34 x 103 meters.

Velocity of fiber link (V) = 70% of speed of light = 0.7 x 3 x 108 = 2.1 x 108 m/s

Bandwidth (B) = 100 Mbps = 100 x 220 bps

Link Delay = Propagation Delay (D/V) + Transmission delay (L/B)

Link Delay = (1609.34 x 103 / 2.1 x 108 ) + ((2. 5 x 220 x 8 )/ (100 x 220 )) = (0.0076) + (0.2) seconds = 0.2076 sec

Link Delay = 0.2076 seconds or 207.6 milli seconds.

High frequency traders in Chicago rely on networks which communicate financial data from New York over a one-way distance of 825 miles. If the round trip for the data through a high speed fiber optic cable takes 14.5 milliseconds, what is the speed of light through the cable? What is the effective index of refraction in the fiber optic cable? If the data is transmitted by microwaves through air (with index of refraction 1.0003), what is the time in milliseconds...

You take a round trip from New York City to Los Angeles. On the outbound plane flight to LA, the plane flies into a 49 mi/hr mi/h headwind. On the return trip to NYC, the wind velocity is unchanged. The trip back to New York City takes 53 minutes minutes less than the trip out to LA. What was the airspeed of this plane, assuming it flew at a constant airspeed out and back? Heading east from New York, a surveyor measures the altitude above sea level once per every 10 horizontal miles traveled. She ends up taking 60 measurements; the mean of these 60 numbers being µ and the  standard deviation being σ. Someone else then creates a box model whose box average is µ and whose box SD is σ. Is this box a good stochastic model for the surveyor’s experiment? Explain.
