Characterizing Network Traffic
There are 1000 stations in a network. Each of the
stations transmit 5 frames/second and size of one
frame is 2000-bits. As, we know in addition to
application data, different protocols add differently sized header
with application data before they are sent through media. The
additional data from protocols are called overhead. For example,
TCP/IP add 20 bytes overhead, UDP adds 8
bytes overhead and Ethernet II adds 38 bytes overhead,
with each data units. Also, routing protocols add overhead when
separate routing information between routers in the network are
exchanged. For example, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) routing
protocols send Hello packets every ten seconds and
size of the Hello packet is 2 Bytes, Enhanced
Interior Gateway Routing Protocols (IGRP) send Hello packet every
five seconds, and Routing Information Protocol (RIP) protocols send
entire the Routing table every 30 seconds. Traffic load calculation
should take these the protocol overheads into account.
Now, if the network uses protocols: TCP/IP and UDP; there are three routers in the network and the routers are using OSPF protocol. So, based on the given information answer the following:
Offered Load = the number of transmitting station × frame generation rate × frame size
= 1000 x 2000 x 5 bps
= 10000000 bps
= 10 Mbps
2. Calculate the total overhead (stations overhead + routers overhead) in the network in Mbps if:
3. What should be the capacity of the network in Mbps? (2 Points)
Please provide detailed solutions
SOLUTION -
1) Offered Load = the number of transmitting station × frame generation rate × frame size
= 1000 x 2000 x 5 bps
= 10000000 bps
= 10 Mbps
2) Overhead: The time it takes to transmit data on a packet-switched network. Each packet requires extra bytes of format information that is stored in the packet header, which, combined with the assembly and disassembly of packets, reduces the overall transmission speed of the raw data.
a) Only TCP/IP is used by each station --- 500Mbps
b) Only UDP is used by each station --- 200Mbps
3) Capacity: Network capacity is the amount of traffic that a network can handle at any given time i.e. 4000 Mbps
