The signal to noise ratio of a communication link is 1000 and its BW is 5GHz. What is the channel capacity for the medium?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The Channel capacity of a link is given by the formula:

where C is the channel capacity in bits per second, B is the bandwidth in Hertz and S/N is signal to noise ratio.

Now

so

putting all in the formula we get

(giga bits per second)

Two communication systems with the same function but having different signal to noise ratio (S/N) have been proposed to replace the defected system in a power plant. System A has an S/N of 95 dB, while system B has an S/N of 85 dB. As the person in charged, you are required to determine the best system to be used and justify your answer.
