The Homebrew Computer Club was one of the original clubs for
enthusiasts of the first
personal computer, the Altair 8800. Read some of their newsletters
and then discuss some
of the issues surrounding this early personal computer.
Issues surrounding the Altair 8800 personal computer are:
1. Front panel is fitted with 120 volt AC switching which was
unprotected against
the contact of the user. Relocation of that switch to rear panel is
required.
2. CPU, 12K of S4k dynamic ram and PIO is not supported by stock
transformer which was
used in 8800.
3. Rectifiers on PS card melt at high current present on 8V bus.
4. Extending the 8 volt bus melt the first and second card.
5. 4 8K static cards are burn up on fixing the 8V bus trace.
6. 88 MCD card sans rams are used to reduced cost for S4K owners
but it didn't work really well
with all Z80s which are card dependent.
7. Cooling of the machine is also an issue as the fan can either
blow or suck air at the cards
but slots don't have place for air to come or air to go because of
card abutting the front panel.
