Question (4)
(I) How do we measure the degree Ductility (II) Why do we need to know the ductility of materials ?
(III) A cylindrical specimen of steel having an original diameter of 12.8mm is tensile tested to fracture and found to have an engineering fracture stress of 460 Mpa. If it’s cross-sectional diameter at fracture is 10.7mm, determine
- The ductility in terms of percent reduction in area
- The true stress at fracture

Ductility means the degree of plastic deformation of a material it sustains before the fracture..Degree of ductility is determined by measuring the percent elongation or reduction in the crossectional area.

Material which is ductile gives sufficient warning before its failure and brittle materials fail suddenly causing immense damage to the structure and lives.. Hence it is important to know the ductility of material.
