A soil sample is 10 cm in diameter and 1 m long. The sample is oriented vertically

in a tube. The tube in which the soil resides is 2.5 m tall. The lower 1 m is occupied

by the soil, and there is 1 m of water ponded on top of the soil. A float valve keeps

the amount of water ponded on the soil at 1 m. Water drips out the bottom of the

soil specimen such that the water pressure at the bottom of the soil column is

atmospheric pressure. Assume that the column of soil is completely saturated with

water and that the porosity of this soil (which is fine sand) is 0.4. The hydraulic

conductivity of the soil is 0.0001 cm/sec.

a. A piezometer is inserted at the mid-

point of the soil column (0.5 m above the

base). Show in a sketch to what point the water in the piezometer would rise.

b. A tracer (dye) is instantly mixed into the water located on top of the soil. Assume

that as the dyed w

ater infiltrates into the soil, there is no mixing of dyed water

with remnant soil water. Rather, assume that the infiltrating dyed water fully and

completely displaces the residual soil water. How long will it take for the dyed

water to show up in the eff

luent liquid?

1.) A liquid of density 1390 km/m^3 flows steadily through a pipe of varying diameter and height. At Location 1 along the pipe, the flow speed is 9.31 m/s and the pipe d1 diameter is 10.3cm . At Location 2, the pipe diameter d2 is 17.5 cm . At Location 1, the pipe is triangle y= 9.31m higher than it is at Location 2. Lake Waiua is Hawaii's only alpine lake.  It has (approximately) vertical sides and a 7000 m2 area.   Between 2010 and 2013, its depth declined from 3m to 0.3 m.    e) The soil of the lake bed has a porosity of ϕ=0.5.  After the lake drained, the soil is unsaturated and has water content of θ=0.3, and a matric potential (head) of -20m.  There is a rainstorm. After 1 day, all the rainfall infiltrates over the unsaturated soils. The cumulative infiltration (F) depth is...

A 3-m-internal-diameter spherical tank made of 1-cm-thick stainless steel is used to store iced water at 0°C. The tank is located outdoors at 18°C. Assume the entire steel tank to be at 0°C and thus the thermal resistance of the tank to be negligible. The heat of fusion of water at atmospheric pressure is hif = 333.7 kJ/kg. The emissivity of the outer surface of the tank is 0.75, and the convection heat transfer coefficient on the outer surface can...
