The existing posted speed limit on a section of highway is 88 km/h and studies have shown that the current 85th percentile speed is 104 km/h. If the posted speed limit is to be increased to the current 85th percentile speed, what should be the increase in the radius of a curve that is just adequate for the existing posted speed limit? Assume a superelevation rate of 0.08 for the existing curve and for the redesigned curve.

Answer #1

Solution:-

Given

Initial speed = 88 km/h

New speed = 104 km/h

super elevation = 0.08

Formula used

R = Radius of curve

e = super elevation

= coefficient of side friction

From the standard value at 85 km/h

side friction = 0.13

and at 104 km/h ,   = 0.1

For

Increase in radius = (290 - 473.14) km

= 183.1 km

A car is travelling on a straight highway where the speed limit is 110 km/h. You are watching it from a point 10 meters away from the road, and at the instance when the car is 20 meters directly away from you the angle that your line of sight makes with a perpendicular to the road increases at the rate of 3 4 radians/sec. Is the car breaking the speed limit? Fully justify your answer. (Note that 1 m/s =...

A two-lane highway with a design speed of 106.7 km/h requires a transition curve for a horizontal curve of 550 m radius. The curve is used to connect the tangents that form an external angle of 24 degree. The lanes of the highway are 3.65 m wide and the coefficient of side friction for this design speed is 0.11. The change of grade between the centreline and the edge (i.e. Δg) is limited to 1 over 250 for comfort. Calculate...
