A waste stream has a dissolved oxygen concentration of 1.5 mg/L, a flow of 0.5 m3 /s, a temperature of 26°C, and an ultimate BOD (or BODu) of 48 mg/L. The waste stream is discharged into a river that is running at 2.2 m3 /s at a saturated DO, a temperature of 12°C, and an ultimate BOD of 1.6 mg/L.

A) Calculate the mixing (a) temperature and (b) ultimate BOD for the river water immediately after discharge of the waste stream.

B) Calculate the mixing dissolved oxygen for the river water immediately after discharge of the waste stream. What is the initial DO deficit of the river after mixing with the waste stream?

8. A wastewater has a dissolved oxygen concentration of 2.0 mg/L and a discharge rate of 1.1 m3/s. The river into which it is being discharged has DO equal to 8.3 mg/L, a flow rate of 1.4 m3/s and a temperature of 200C. Assuming complete and instantaneous mixing, estimate the initial dissolved oxygen deficit of the mixture of wastewater and river water just downstream from the discharge point. The saturated valued of DO at 200C is 9.1 mg/L.

A wastewater treatment plant with a zero dissolved oxygen, discharges 10,000 m3/d to a small stream. The stream average flow is 0.4 m3/s with a dissolved oxygen level of 8 mg/l and a BOD5 of 2 mg/l. The minimum oxygen demand that must be maintained in the stream is 4 mg/l. Determine the maximum BOD5 that can be discharged if the initial ultimate BOD after the mixing is 8.1 mg/l. The City of Columbus recently issued an NPDES permit to a beer brewery discharging wastewater at a flowrate of 0.15 m3/sec into Buckeye Creek (flowrate = 0.25 m3/sec), such that BOD5 of immediately after discharge must not exceed 2.5 mg/L. Upstream of the discharge, BOD5 in Buckeye Creek was measured at 1.5 mg/L.
