The reconstruction period was from 1863 to 1877 in American history. Much of the southern was destroyed during the civil war. All the farms and plantation were burned down and their crops destroyed. The rebuilding of South after civil war is called Reconstruction. The difference between north and south were that south was to be reconstructed from ashes after the war and the purposeof reconstruction is to get back south to it's previous position and join them back in the union again. Contribution was done by north for reconstruction of South. It took around 13 years to reconstruction.
To overcome the laws made by Congress the southern states passed black codes. That is not allowing black people to vote, get jobs and own lands . This created problems during reuniting with North.
