The fill weight of tomato paste in seven cans tested were: 7.2, 6.8, 6.7, 7.3, 6.9, 6.8 and 7.0 ounces. Suppose the manufacturer requires a standard deviation of less than 0.12. Does the data indicate that the standard deviation is less than 0.12 ounce? Test using α = 0.05.

Answer #1

Given that

The fill weight tomato paste in seven cans tested were: 7.2,6.8,6.7,7.3,6.9,6.8 and 7.0.

n = 7

From the sample data

= 6.96 , S = 0.2225

H0: = 0.12

Ha: < 0.12

Test statistics

= ( n - 1) S2 / 2

= ( 7 -1) * 0.22252 / 0.122

= 20.63

Chi-square critical value at 0.05 level with 6 df = 1.635

Since test statistics > 1.635 , Fail to reject H0.

We do not have sufficient evidence to conclude that the standard deviation is less than 0.12 ounce.

(a) A filling process is designed to fill tomato paste cans with 200g of tomato paste. The standard deviation of the filling process is 24g. It is deemed out of order if the average weight of content is different from 200g. To test the filling process, samples of 36 cans are selected at random and the average weight is calculated. Suppose a sample produces a mean weight of 204g. Based on this sample result can you conclude the filling process...

The manufacturer of cans of salmon that are supposed to have a net weight of 6 ounces tells you that the net weight is actually a normal random variable with a mean of 6.2 ounces and a standard deviation of 0.11 ounce. Suppose that you draw a random sample of 37 cans. Find the probability that the mean weight of the sample is less than 6.19 ounces.

The manufacturer of cans of salmon that are supposed to have a net weight of 6 ounces tells you that the net weight is actually a normal random variable with a mean of 5.97 ounces and a standard deviation of 0.23 ounce. Suppose that you draw a random sample of 34 cans. Find the probability that the mean weight of the sample is less than 5.94 ounces.
