Question

Why do we compute principal stresses?

Why do we compute principal stresses?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

When you design any structural component, You need to know the critical values of stress, So that, you can design for the greater capacities.

So there are only 2 major types of stresses

  1. Normal
  2. Shear
  3. Combination of both.

A material can fail due to shear even though a tensile load(Normal load) is applied. So the point is you cannot design for normal stress nor shear stress as they can act together to cause failure.

In simple terms principal stresses gives us the critical values of stress due to shear, normal, combination of both.

Therefore, it is necessary to compute principal stresses.

I hope the solution is clear.

Stresses at a point are: 60 MPa in the x-direction, 80 MPa in the y-direction and no shear stress in this reference x-y plane. Note that these are already the principal stresses and the reference plane x-y is the principal plane. What are the stresses at 45o clockwise from the principal planes? Show them on a properly-oriented element. Mohr’c cirle is to be used and no equations will be accepted.
