Two cyclones are available to treat an airstream with particles. The units can be placed in series or in parallel. When in series, though, the collection efficiency decreases due to the much higher flow rates (the parallel arrangement gets a 50/50 split). In series, each unit has a 90 percent collection efficiency; in parallel, each has a 98 percent efficiency. Which arrangement should be used, if overall efficiency is the primary design consideration?

If the cyclones are connected in series, the overall efficiency is 99% and when the cyclones are connected in parallel it is 98%. Hence the series arrangement is more efficient than the parallel arrangement.
