An electric pump consumes 15 kW electricity, and is used to pump water at a volumetric rate of 50 L/s. The absolute pressures at the inlet and outlet of the pump 100 kPa and 300 kPa. Assuming that there is negligible difference in kinetic energy between the inlet and the outlet (how is that possible?) and that there is negligible difference in height between the inlet and the outlet, calculate: (A) the mechanical efficiency of the pump, and (B) the amount of temperature increase for the water going through the pump. (Assume all power not used to increase the water’s mechanical energy is used to increase the thermal energy of the water.)

1) A nozzle is a device for increasing the velocity of a steadily flowing stream of fluid. At the inlet to a certain nozzle the enthalpy of the fluid is 3025 kJ/kg and the velocity is 60 m/s. At the exit from the nozzle the enthalpy is 2790 kJ/kg. The nozzle is horizontal and there is negligible heat loss from it. (i) Find the velocity at the nozzle exit. (ii) If the inlet area is 0.1 m2 and specific volume...
