Explain the concept of equal displacements. How does this impact our design methodology? (Related to Earthquake design)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Equal displacement is the principle used to calculate inelastic displacement by analysing displacement corresponding model of their elastic structures. This states that peak displacement of non elastic building subjected to earthquake or seismic vibration is equivalent to peak displacement of elastic building and is independent of yield strength of system.

This equal displacement rule plays a significant role in seismic design as it considers the basic assumptions regarding strength reduction factors satisfying condition defined as per seismic design codes
