Substitution, during the construction period is generally avoided. However Construction Specification Institute (CSI) , there are two ligitimate scenarios where substitution may be required or allowable.

1) Owner Initiated substitution.

The owner may decide to change a certain system or element of the project.

2) Unavailability of Product

When there is unavailability of a product due to reasons like , labour strike, large distance of the manufacturing unit from the site, or there might be a case that the manufacturing of the product has been stopped. In such a situation, a substitution of the product is done is order to complete the work on time without any delay.
