Answer #1
  • The following are some major ways of maintaining desired microorganisms in Waste water treatment .
  1. Attached Growth system .
  2. Suspended Growth system.

1] Attach growth system - Example -Trickling Filter -In these type of system Micro organism are attached to a filter and forms a biofilm on the filter , Now waste water is allowed to pass through this filter and hence biological treatment of water takes place. In simple language we can say here food is feeded to micro-organism.

2] Suspended growth system -Example- Activated sludge process - in these type of system Micro organism are suspended in waste water and in the form of activated sludge and hence biological activity takes place. In simple language we can say here micro organism is free to go to their food.

Problem #3: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Stream Quality A wastewater treatment plant designed for a community of 45,000 people has a flow of 100 gal/person/day and a BOD5 loading of 0.2 lb/person/day. The upstream characteristics of the receiving waters are: stream flow rate = 20 cfs and BOD5 = 2 mg/L The water quality standards require the in-stream BOD5 to be less than 7 mg/L in this stretch of the river. The minimum BOD removal efficiency that the treatment...
