Please Answer Both Parts

A)Describe the method of investigating the shear strength of clays at large strains by means of the ring shear apparatus.

B) Write down the assumptions made in Terzaghi’s theory of one-dimensional consolidation.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

B. Assumptions of Terzaghi one dimensional consolidation theory:-

1. Soil is homogenous and isotropic.

2. Soil is fully saturated and remains saturated throughout the process of consolidation indicate initial compression is not considered.

3. The consolidation is one dimension, this indicates that water is expelling out only in the vertical direction and since there is no change in the area so the volume is changing only through depth.

4. Darcy's law is valid.

5. Strains coming on the soil are small.

6. The hydrodynamic lag is considered and plastic lag is ignored however plastic lag is found to exist it means the time required for the plastic lag is ignored ,it means secondary lag is not considered.

PLEASE ANSWER ALL PARTS AND SHOW ALL WORK! In this section, all collisions will be completely elastic – that is, the total kinetic energy of the system will be constant throughout. Also, the collisions are entirely one-dimensional, with all motion taking place in either the northward or southward direction. The setting: a room with a frictionless floor. A block of mass 1 kg is placed on the floor and initially pushed northward, whereupon it begins sliding with a constant speed...
