Question

How is soil moisture determined?

How is soil moisture determined?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Soil moisture represent the amount of water stored or retained by soil in the voids of soil.

Soil moisture is the basic properties of soil which affects various properties of soil and it is representes as a ratio or percentage also.

It is the ratio of amount of water by the total weight or volume of soil presented as ratio.

Symbol. W%

The simple method is take a sample of soil and mesaured the weight as (W-1)

Put the soil for oven drying for 24- hours and mesaured the weight of soil as (W-2)

Water content is : calculate amount of water by subtracting the weights and divided by the original volume of soil (W-1).

(W-1)--(W-2)/(W-1)

It is simply called oven drying method to calculate the amount of water content. It is direct method to calculate the moisture content of soil.

Cation exchange capacity (CEC) is an important soil property and its magnitude is determined by the nature of the colloids present. (i) Describe the type of soil colloid(s) that have permanent charge and explain why the charge is permanent. (ii) Describe the type of soil colloid(s) that have variable charge and the structures that lead to this variability. (iii) What environmental factor(s) are responsible for changing soil colloid charge and how does it (do they) elicit its (their) effect.

A highway embankment is constructed from soil having a final compacted unit weight of 20.53 kN/m3 and a moisture content of 17.6%. The construction is undertaken by hauling soil from a nearby borrow pit. The soil in the borrow pit has a natural unit weight of 16.29 kN/m3 and a moisture content of 13.2%. Assuming there is no loss of moisture while carrying the soil from the pit to the embankment location, the volume of soil to be excavated from...
