Rock are geological formations with certain complexities such as cracks and joints.

Popping is the phenomenon when stresses are applied in the lateral direction leading to the increase in dimension of cracks results in bursting or failure of rock.

When the stress is applied in the direction perpendicular to joint plane leading to almost complete diminishing of the joints.Thus making the rock mass behave like an intact rock.This is locking phenomenon.
