Question

what is the difference between a 15-minute unit hydrograph and a one-hour unit hydrograph?

what is the difference between a 15-minute unit hydrograph and a one-hour unit hydrograph?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1-h unit hydrograph: here "1 " shows TIME of rainfall ( ie: 1 hr)

"Unit" shows DEPTH of rainfall.(ie: 1 cm or 1 Inch )

SO, 1-h unit hydrograph means due to rainfall of 1 hr there is 1 cm of rainfall depth on catchment.

15-minute unit hydrograph: here "15 minute" shows TIME of rainfall ( ie: 0.25 hr or 1/4 hr)

"Unit" shows DEPTH of rainfall (ie: 1 cm or 1 inch)

SO, 15- minute unit hydrograph means due to rainfall of 15 minutes there is 1 cm of rainfall depth on catchment.

............................................................................

Remark: rainfall intensity (ie: depth of rainfall per hour) of "15-minute unit hydrograph" is 4 times that of "1-hr unit hydrograph".

Calculate and plot the 1-hr Snyder/gamma unit hydrograph for a 60 mi2 basin that has a total basin length of 10.9 mi and a length to the basin centroid of 6.5 mi. Assume Ct = 2.15 and Cp = 0.62. Repeat problem 1 but change the basin area to 120 mi2 . On the same graph, plot the new unit hydrograph with the unit hydrograph from problem 1. How do the unit hydrographs differ?
