Poor drainage system reduces amount of water infiltrated into the soil, thus

increase surface runoff. Poor supervision, heavy rainfall and inadequate budget

are the major factors for poor maintenance of drainage system. The rivers and

drains are clogged with sediment and garbage which reduce the carrying capacity

of the drainage system. The poor drainage system that could not cope with intense

rainfall is the main cause of disastrous flooding that hit Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Given a residential area (link house) of Kepong, Kuala Lumpur has a topography

of 7 hectares and the management of drainage system is conducted according to

Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia (MSMA 2nd Edition).

The major drainage system conveys and controls runoff to larger

downstream system and water bodies. The major system of the link house

of Kepong, Kuala Lumpur is designed and developed to convey runoff

through the catchment. The land surface of the link house is paved with

moderate slope of 3%. Determine the peak flow rate using Rational

Method. You can make assumptions for any value or parameters that is

not given here.
