If the value of Gs is 2.7 and water content is 12% and degree of saturation is 1. Calculate the dry density of this soil. (Assume the value of unit weight of water)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given Data

Specific gravity , G = 2.7,

water content , w = 12 %

Degree of saturation , S = 1, so the soil is fully saturated

Dry density = ? , also assume unit weight of water = 9.81 KN/m3

  in the question we need to find out the Dry density. for that we can apply the soil properties relations

We know Dry unit weight,  d = G w / (1+ e) , where e = void ratio , e is not given in the question,

We have the relation e = wG /S , substitute all the values

= 0.12 * 2.7 / 1

e = 0.324

Now substitute all the vaues in the equation of Dry unit weight equation

   d = 2.7 *9.81 / (1+ 0.324)

= 20.335 KN / m3

Now dry Density = Unit weight / g where g = acdeleration due to gravity

=20.005 / 9.81

= 2.039 Kg / m3
