What is the Bayesian method what is it used for in flood analysis

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Bayesian method of flood analysis is a just another method with statistical model for estimating flood frequency by combining uncertain annual maximum (AMAX) data from a river gauge with estimates of flood peak discharge from various historic sources that predate the period of instrument records.

It can be used for the following :

a) Estimates of the frequency of extreme floods are highly uncertain.

b) Prime source of uncertainty is limited availability of data.

c) A Bayesian model combines gauge data with historic flood records.

d) Confidence limits in estimated frequency of extreme flood events reduced by ∼50%.

A flood damaged a machine used in Ralph’s business. The machine had been purchased 2 years earlier at a cost of $14,000, and Ralph had claimed $4,000 in depreciation. The FMV of the machine was $18,000 before the flood and $3,000 after the flood. The machine was insured, and Ralph was reimbursed $12,000. What is Ralph’s gain or loss from the casualty? A.$2,000 loss. B.$3,000 loss. C.$2,000 gain. D.$15,000 loss.
