At what relative humidity do you expect a maximum corrosion rate in concrete? Please Explain in detail.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Corrosion in concrete is due to carbonation and dur to chlorides.

Corrosion take place in concrete when relative humidity is more than 80% . And the corrosion rate is decreased with increasing in time .

Maximum corrosion rate will only reached in very wet environment and when relative humidity is approaching about 100% .

Relative humidity = (actual moisture content of air * 100)/maximum moisture content of air at that temperature

When the rate of carbonation is maximum , the rate of corrosion is modest .

When carbonation reached reinforcement steel in concrete is depassivated and corrosion Start of there is oxygen and water are available there .
