what is the influence of the fineness modulus on the properties of concrete mixes?

Answer #1

Fineness modulus is an empirical figure which is calculayed by dividing total percentage of aggregate retained on a sieve by 100.

It is a figure that can go in fractions.

Following are the effects on the concrete mix :

Higher the value of FM, coarser iels the aggregate and hence packing of concrete would not be sufficient.

If we talk in context of sand then, fineness modulus of sand affects the compressive strength of concrete in a btter way. Higher FM increases the cmpressive strength of the concrete.

Fineness modulus has little impact on permeability of the concrete.

Net cost of concrete decreases by increase in FM value of aggregate.

It doesn't mean that we can use a very high FM aggregate for cost savings because it will ultimately affect workability of the concrete too.

Hence, FM of 2.7 must not exceed.

Concrete is required for an interior concrete column in a commercial building in Corvallis, Oregon. A specified compressive strength, f’c , of 4000 psi is required at 28 days using an ASTM C 150 Type I. The design calls for a minimum of 3 in. of concrete cover over the reinforcing steel. The minimum distance between reinforcing bars is 2.5 in. A slump of 4 inches should be the target. No statistical data on previous mixes are available. Follow mixture...

A short reinforced concrete column is subjected to a 700 kips axial compressive load. The modulus of elasticity of plain concrete and steel are 4,500,000 psi and 29,000,000, respectively, and the cross-sectional area of steel is 3.0% of that of the reinforced concrete. Considering the column as a structural member made of a composite material and subjected to load parallel to the steel bars. A mixing drum at a construction company mixes the highest quality concrete on the east coast. This mixing drum is available 18 hours a day. It produces about 10 pounds of concrete a day. As this construction company makes several kinds of concrete a day, they have to stop the machine and change over to a new type of concrete a few times a day. Each pound of concrete takes about 60 minutes to produce. Within this 60 minutes, 50...
