Sand and clay are treated differently to discuss the engineering behavior of soils because of the following reasons -

1) The size of sand particles are larger than that of the clay particles which affect the engineering properties of soil.

2) Clay is usually formed by chemical weathering which changes their chemical structures.

3) Clay contain minerals which is responsible for swelling of soils which is not present in sands.

4) There is a major difference in permeability and compressibility characteristics of sand and clay.
