Passive film is a ultra thin layer of corrosion on the metal which resist further corrosion from happening to that metal.

These layers are very useful in reducing the corrosion to the metal.

It is a oxidised layer of the same metal that exist as a passive filn to that metal for eg: A thin film of Al2O3 on aluminium acts aas a protective covering which prevents further oxidation of Aluminium.

It is a property of only few metals and all metals donot exibit this property.
