What is the parameter responsible for transforming Kerogen to Petroleum

What is the parameter responsible for transforming Kerogen to Petroleum

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The most important parameter for converting kerogen to petroleum is higher temparature.

which requires both the higher temperatures than of which one finds at the surface of the earth and also a long period of geological time

About 100–150◦C is the ideal temperature range for this conversion of kerogen to oil, which is called maturation.

The chemical bonds in these large molecules (kerogen) are broken with increasing temparature and kerogen is transformed into smaller molecules which make up oil and gas.

The conversion of kerogen to petroleum is a chemical reaction

The rate of chemical reaction depends on following factors

  1. Temperature
  2. Pressure
  3. Time
  4. Minerals or other substances which increase the rate of reaction (catalysts) or which inhibit reactions (inhibitors).

ORGANISATION OF PETROLEUM EXPORTING COUNTRIES- OPEC ( MAJOR SUPPLIERS) VERSUS ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT- OECD ( MAJOR BUYERS) In the short run, both the supply and demand for crude petroleum oil are relatively inelastic. Supply is inelastic because the quantity of known crude petroleum oil reserves and the capacity for oil extraction cannot be changed quickly, as price fluctuates, couple with the indiscipline of some OPEC member countries in dire need for money for development, often exceed their...

A round pipe of varying diameter carries petroleum from a wellhead to a refinery. At the wellhead, the pipe's diameter is 56.3 cm ( 0.563 m) and the flow speed of the petroleum is 12.3 m/s. At the refinery, the petroleum flows at 5.03 m/s. What is the volume flow rate of the petroleum along the pipe and what is the pipe's diameter at the refinery? volume flow rate: m3/s diameter: cm
