I am currently designing a communication tower. There are wind loads and dead loads. How do you solve the forces of the members? Should I solve it as truss by using method of joints? Will there be bending moments for the leg members? I dont have a program to use so I solve it manually. Thanks

Answer #1

Transmission towers are treated as three dimensional trusses and in the analysis, the joints are considered as pinned. As a result, there will not be any bending moment in the members.

The analysis can be done using FEM software such as Staad etc. While solving manually, at each joint there will be three equations of equilibrium, namely  sigma Fx = 0, sigma Fy = 0 and sigma Fz = 0 and you can solve for the unknown member forces from the simultaneous equations.
