Total Stress and Effective Stress

An embankment is to be constructed rapidly over a soft clay deposit. Which stage of the construction is assumed to be the most critical design condition and explain why.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The most critical design condition for such type of construction on soft clay deposit is total stress condition using the value of undrained cohesion Cu obtained from undrained tests on undistiurbed samples of clay deposit and using an undrained angle of internal fricition as u  = 0

The analysis is carried in terms of total stress using the value of Cu obtianed from undrained test on undisturbed samples. Since the soil is saturated, u = 0 , and the analysisi is usually reffered to by this description.

A very wide embankment 5 m high is constructed from a fill with a unit weight of 16 kN/m3 over a saturated sand deposit with the presence of water table coinciding with its top surface. At a depth of 3 m below the top surface of the sand deposit, determine the following: (a) total and effective vertical stresses before construction of the embankment, (b) increase in vertical stress induced by the construction of the embankment, and (c) total and effective...

Using the data in Textbook Problem 8.8: a. Plot the vertical effective consolidation stress versus void ratio on both arithmetic and semi-log graphs. For the arithmetic graph, constrain the vertical axes to 0.55 and 0.95; and the horizontal to 0 to 1,500 kPa; for the semi-log graph, use the same vertical axis constraints, but use 10 kPa and 10,000 kPa to ease interpretation. Plot the data points only, and draw in a smooth curve by hand. Plot each graph on...
