explain briefly the 3 point test in wood

explain briefly the 3 point test in wood

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Solution :

3 point test is basic test in wood to determine the stress location in wood.

In this test the specimen with rectangular shape placed on two parallel point support conditions and point load is applied at middle

Both supports are like pin supports free to expand and bend of specimen.

The peak stress produced at 3-point test is mid point of specimen (mostly) with reduced stress elsewhere.

Hence this test is ideal for specific isolation of stress on specimen.

If you have any doubts about this please mention comment i will reply for that thank you

The bridge project in class is a lot like a 3 point bend test. The two supports for the test just happen to be very far apart, let's say 60 cm. If you decide just to take a single strip of balsa wood for your bridge, which for example has cross sectional dimensions of 1 cm on a side and a modulus of 3.4 GPa, how far will the midpoint deflect in mm when the 1 kg mass is placed...
