  1. A municipal solid waste to be combusted has the following composition:

Component

Fraction by Weight

Food

45

Paper

30

Textiles

10

Wood

15

  1. Assuming the weights are on a dry basis, estimate the heat value of the waste.
  2. Assuming the weights are on a wet basis, estimate the heat value of the waste.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans) Given,

a) Using Khan's formula ,heat value of waste (MJ/kg) can be given by,

E = 0.051(F + 3.6 CP) + 0.352 (PLR)

where, F = fraction of food waste

CP = fraction of cardboard, wood and paper

PLR = fraction of plastic and rubber

E = 0.051(45 + 3.6(30+15) ) + 0.352(0)

E = 10.55 MJ/kg

b) To determine heat value on wet basis assume moisture content in each waste as:

Waste Fraction by weight Moisture content (%) Dry weight
Food 45 70 13.5
Paper 30 6 28.2
Textile 10 10 9
Wood 15 20 12

Now using, Khan formula,

E = 0.051(13.5 + 3.6(28.2+12) ) + 0.352(0)

E = 8.07 MJ/kg

A municipal solid waste incinerator has an emission factor of 20 lbs PM/ton of waste. Assume that the maximum two-hour permissible emission level is 0.18 g/m3 . If 80 dry standard cubic feet of flue gas are produced per pound of waste combusted, determine the control equipment collection efficiency needed to meet the emission limit. 1 ton = 2000 lb. 1 lb = 454 g. 1 ft 3 =28.3 L. PM = particulate matter.

The town of Cleanland (population 225,000) produces solid waste at the rate of 5lb/capita/day (see waste composition below). The town officials are considering the construction of a material recovery facility (see schematic below) to handle all the solid waste except the yard wastes (collected /managed separately). To aid in the cost estimate, calculate the amounts (1lb/day) of aluminum and ferrous metals recovered. Assume the separation efficiencies given below apply. Show all work. A dry food product has been exposed to a 30% relative-humidity environment at 15°C for 5 h without a weight change. The moisture content has been measured and is at 7.5% (wet basis). The product is moved to a 50% relative-humidity environment, and a weight increase of 0.1 kg/kg product occurs before equilibrium is achieved. a.
