Q.1 define coefficient of settlement

Q.2 A footing foundation of 3m x 3m is to be constructed at a site at a depth of 1.5 m below ground level.The water table is at the base level of foundation.The average static cone penetration resistance obtained at the site is 20kg/m2. The soil is cohesive.Determine the safe bearing capacity for a settlement of 40 mm

Q.3 Draw the pressure distribution diagram for sand and clay layer at the beneath of rigid footing.

Q.4 state the methods of minimising total and differential and total settlement.

Answer #1

Ans 1) Coefficient of settlement is a factor depends on footing shape , footing flexibility , distance to rigid base and footing depth which is used to calculate settlement in footing .

Ans 2) We know,

q = qc x Af

where, q = safe bearing capacity

qc = static cone penetration

Af= area of footing

q = 20 x 3 x 3

= 180 kg /m2

Ans 3) Pressure diagrams are as follows:

Ans 4) Methods to minimize total and differential settlement :

1) Used raft foundation with thick slab

2) Use deeper underground space to reduce pressure on soil

3) Use of soil stabilizing techniques

4) Use of soil reinforcement
