A vehicular stream at q 1000 veh/hour and u40 miles/hour is travelling on a two-lane highway (one-lane in each direction), and due to oncoming traffic, passing is not possible. Now, a truck puls into the lane travelling at 10 miles/hour. As the appchng vehicles join the slow- moving platoon behind the truck, the concentration rises to 120 veh/mile within the platoon. After 15 minutes, the truck turns off the highway. The vehicles in the platoon behind the truclk can then accelerate and leave the slow-moving platoon at u = 20 miles/hour and with a flow of 1400 veh/hour, which is capacity for this roadway in this condition (no pa) (a) How long will it take for the 10 mile/hour platoon to disappear? (b) How far behind or ahead of where the truck pulled off the highway does the last vehicle going 10 miles/hour accelerate to 20 miles/hour? (c) What is the maximum length of the 10 miles/hour platoon of vehicles (in feet and in vehicles)?

A six-lane multilane highway (three lanes in each direction) has a peak-hour factor of 0.90, 11-ft lanes with a 4-ft right side shoulder, and a two-way left-turn lane in the median. The directional peak-hour traffic flow is 4000 vehicles, and the traffic stream has 5% single-unit trucks and 5% tractor-trailers. What will the level of service of this highway be on a 2.5% upgrade that is 1.5 miles long if the speed limit is 55 mph and there are 15...

A data set of traffic stream characteristics, such as space mean speed (u: miles per hour), density (k: vehicles per mile) and traffic flow rate (q: vehicles per hour), was collected for a freeway lane. The data reveals a relationship between flow rate (q) and density (k) as calibrated below: q=66*(k-k^2/160) Where, q = flow rate of the lane (vehicles per hour); k = density of the lane (vehicles per mile). Answer the following questions: (1)Determine the free-flow space mean...
