In steel structural design, for the design of office buildings, it is suitable to use one way slab or two way slab?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In steel structure design of office buildings the type of slab used are both one way and two way slabs as for long corridors one way slab is preferred as one length is longer as compared to another dimension and in the case of office cabins and meeting rooms two way salbs are used as both dimensions are comparable in two way slabs and two way slab is supported on four sides and one way slab is only supported on two sides only. But for high rise ofice buildings only two way slabs are preffrred as they resist loads in both directions whereas one way slabs resist loads only in one direction.

Slabs are plate elements forming floors and roof in buildings which normally carry uniformly distributed loads. There are different classifications of slabs. Common types include one-way slabs, two-way slabs, ribbed slabs, waffle slabs and flat slabs. As a structural engineer, critically discuss the essential criteria on the choice of a slab system with engineering justifications. (Minimum word limit: 400)

The project will include the design of One Way Slabs, Beams and Columns. Choose the largest room in your house/apartment and measure the area. let's say (length 6m* width 4m) ( height 3m) Steel yield stress (fy = 60000 psi) Concrete ultimate compressive strength (f’c = 4000 psi) Reinforced concrete density = 150 lb/ft3. Normal weight concrete is used. The slab is treated as a one way slab and subjected to a dead load of 120 psf (excluding the self-weight...

Design a simply supported one-way reinforced concrete floor slab to span 12 ft and carry a service live load of 180 psf and a service dead load of 20 psf. Use fc’=3000 psi and fy=60,000 psi. Make the slab thickness to 1⁄2 inch increments. (Hint: Design the slab according to the ACI Code minimum thickness)

Design a simple-span one-way slab to carry a uniformly distributed live load of 450 psf. this is the only load to be supported other than the self weight of the slab. the span is 7-ft, center-to-center of the supports. Assume f'c = 4000 psi, fy = 60000 psi. Design per foot of width.

A company has two office buildings 400 feet apart, each with its own LAN. To connect the two networks, you plan to dig a trench and lay cable between the two buildings. Design a one-way floor slab to carry a uniform live load of 500 psf on a simply supported span of 21 ft, given fc’=4000 psi and fy=50000 psi. Use the ACI 318 code. Keep the reinforcement ratio at about 30% of the amount of balanced strain condition so that deflection is unlikely to be excessive.
