Compute the required compression and tension strengths in kips for the connection of the building to the foundation pedestal. If dead load is 4 kips in compression. The building square plan 20 ft on each side and is 18 ft tall.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans) Given,

Dead load in compression = 4kips

Cross section of building = 20ft x 20ft

Height of building = 18ft

Assuming wind load of 30 lb/ft2 and snow load of 50lb/ft2 ,

1) Snow load

= 20/2 x 20/2 x 50

= 5000 lb

= 5 kips

3) Wind load

= 30 x 20 x 18

= 10.80 kips ( compression)

4) Dead load

= 4 kips (compression)

Total compression load= 10.80 + 4

= 14.80 kips

Total tension Force:

Let us consider half of portion of building ,

Total load = 10.8 /2

= 5.4 kips

Tension force = 5.4 x 9 /20

= 2.43 kips
