Case study of Silo tank constructed in soft clay

Case study of Silo tank constructed in soft clay

Homework Answers

Answer #1

● Generally soft clay are not good in bearing capacity so that it requires additional safety design against the failure of the structure. Soft clay generally shows a low bearing capacity and low shear strength but by some means it can be better for use in construction.

For construction of silo on the soft clay ia not so easy because silo tank will have large weight after load and it can be collapse during use. So foundation of the silo tank must be such that it can bear the load easily with any danger.

The silo tank foundation should have concrete flat bottom and steel structure flat bottom, it can also be deep piles which can hold bearing capacity. The selection should based on the location requirement, the storage tank capacity and the tank size.

Thank you.

The site you are investigating in Beaufort, SC, has soft clay deposit overlying a sand deposit. The soft clay deposit ranges from the existing ground surface to a depth of 5 ft, while the sand deposit extends from a depth of 5 ft to a depth of 20 ft. Underlying the sand deposit is the Cooper Marl Formation. The groundwater table is located 2 ft below the ground surface. You have determined that the proposed structure will need to be...

Assume a rigid strip footing is constructed on a normally consolidated clay layer under a uniformly distributed vertical load. The depth of footing is zero and the water table is a few metres below the surface ground. The average shear strength parameters of the clay layer are: • At the beginning of loading: fu = 0, cu = 50 kPa • Long time after loading:, f’ = 25° and c’ = 0 kPa. (a) In order to stabilise a section of a proposed road on a deep soft clay layer, the vibro replacement technique is used. According to the particle size distribution of the backfill material, the following information is given: D50 = 50 mm, D20 = 10 mm and D10 = 0.5 mm with a trace of fine grained soil (less than 3%). Check is this soil can be used as a backfill material? b) Explain why preloading and prefabricated vertical drains...

A vertical-sided trench was being cut in a very soft clay soil with a density of about 110 pcf. A depth of 8 ft had been reached when the sides of the trench caved in. Could the trench be completed to a depth of 10 ft by sloping the sides before installing bracing? If so, how steeply may the sides be cut? Show your calculations and sketch the procedure you would follow to complete the job. Apply both the design...

An article presents the results of a study of soft drink and smoking habits in a sample of adults. Of 11705 people who said they consume soft drinks weekly, 2527 said they were smokers. Of 14685 who said they almost never consume soft drinks, 2503 were smokers. Find a 95% confidence interval for the difference between the proportions of smokers in the two groups. (Round the final answers to four decimal places.) The 95% confidence interval is (  ,  )
