Explain the purpose for recycle flow in the high-rate trickling filter process.

Explain the purpose for recycle flow in the high-rate trickling filter process.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

High rate trickling filter are generally associated with increased H. R. T, incresed ventilation by reducing depth of filter. Because of which the contact time of biomass is less so lesser oxidation takes place. To overcome this drawback, recirculation is done i. e., returning a portion of treated or partially treated sewage to the treatment process.

The following are the advantages of recirculation

1. Uniform loading rate can be achieved.

2. Sewage gets diluted in this process.

3. Efficient B. O. D removal.

To further treat the nitrogenous matter, 2 stage filter is generally provided.

Draw a neat treatment flow chart for a municipal wastewater treatment. Treated wastewater will be discharged into Red River (Fargo, ND). Please label all units and show flow directions. Also indicate (in the flow chart) where sludge will be generated and chemicals will be added. You can use either a trickling filter or activated sludge process as your biological treatment process. A rapid filter unit is to produce a maximum flow of 23,000 m3 /day. The nominal filtration rate is 120 m/day and is not to exceed 180 m/day with one filter being backwashed nor 240 m/day with one filter being backwashed and one filter out of service. Determine the number of filter units required and the individual filter area. How much water is required to wash one filter if the backwash rate is 1 m/min and the duration is 10...

One process for the production of methanol is the catalytic reaction of carbon dioxide and hydrogen. The chemical reaction is given by: CO2  3H2  CH3OH  H2O It is desired to produce 1000 mol/hr of methanol. The single pass conversion of the reactor is 10% while the overall conversion is 80% (both in terms of hydrogen). Note, carbon dioxide in the fresh feed is in 20% excess and all of the product (methanol) and the byproduct (water) is...
