Why is the theoritical oxygen deman always greater than biochemical oxygen demand?

Why is the theoritical oxygen deman always greater than biochemical oxygen demand?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Theoretical oxygen demand is the amount of oxygen required to oxidise a compound completely stable oxidation compounds.

Biochemical oxygen demand is the amount of oxygen required for microorganisms to decompose the compound into simple oxidation compounds.the bod is dependent on type of organism and compound to oxidation i.e, the biodegradability of compound.

So,in this phenomenon the thod is fixed and bod depends on the above factors.so the thod is always greater than bod.

Bod = .9Thod - 1

Tests such as the COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and Permanganate Index are a measure of the oxidisable content of water and a guide to the potential consumption of DO (dissolved oxygen). Suppose that effluent with a high COD or Permanganate Index of 1000 mg/L was discharged into a stream. Describe what would happen to the DO (dissolved oxygen) in this environment.
