Question

what can carry more lod for the same size member tension or compression?

what can carry more lod for the same size member tension or compression?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Tension member are designed to carry tensile forces.

Compression member are designed to carry compression forces.

Tension member carry load more efficiently than compression one. Because in tension member normal stress is proportional to strain and there is no chances of buckling failure of the member i.e. there is no extra stress due to buckling.

But in compression member there is a chance of buckling of the member along with the normal stress due to loading. So its load capacity is less.

So due to this a member will carry more tension load than the compression load.

Select a single-angle tension member of A36 steel to resist a dead load of 20 kips and a live load of 50 kips. The length of the member is 20 feet, and it will be connected to a 1⁄2 - inch thick gusset plate with one line of 3⁄4-inch- diameter bolts through the long legs. There will be four or more bolts in this line.

A L4x4x1/2 tension member is welded to a gusset plate with two 5/16 inch fillet welds that are 8 inches long each. The weld begins at the front edge of the gusset plate. The fabricator wants to conserve gusset plate material and wants to use the least width gusset plate as possible. Using the Whitmore section width, what is the least width of gusset plate the fabricator can use (round to the nearest ½ inch).

a) Outside a house run high-voltage lines (sometimes called “high tension” lines) that carry the electrical power throughout our neighborhood. These are typically many kilovolts -- much higher in voltage than the 120 V at the electrical receptacles in our walls, so they are even more dangerous. However, birds sit on these wires all the time and squirrels run across them quite safely. Explain why it’s safe for a bird to alight with its feet on a high voltage wire....
