Describe the term most economical section of a channel. Explain the condition for most
economical rectangular section for an open channel flow.

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • A channel section is said to be most economical when the cost of construction of the channel is minimum. Cost of construction is minimum when excavation & lining is minimum. A most economical section of a channel also gives maximum discharge for a given cross-sectional area & bed slope.
  • For a rectangular section to be most economical, Following two conditions must be satisfied:- 1] Width (B) = 2 x Depth (d) 2] Hydraulic mean depth (m)
