Discuss and compare the sludge retention time (SRT) as a design parameter for the following biological systems with:
a. Carbon removal
b. Nitrification
c. Biological Phosphorous removal
Sludge Retention Time(SRT):-
The Sludge Retention Time (SRT) is the average time for which the activated-sludge solids remains in the system.
The SRT is an important design and operating parameter for the activated-sludge process and is usually expressed in days.
● The minimum SRT for carbon removal is less than 1 day but the high rate range of 2–3 days.
● SRT of 7 to 10 days at 10°C is required, for conventional nitrification.
● A SRT more than 12 days is necessary to complete the biological phosphorus removal.
