A solid steel bar 100 mm diameter is firmly encased by an 8 mm brass liner over its entire 750 mm length. The component is securely fixed at both ends and the temperature of the system is evenly increased by 100ºC.

Calculate EACH of the following:

The difference between the induced stresses;

The final length of the bar if it is free to expand.

Note:   Modulus of elasticity for steel = 206 GN/m2

            Modulus of elasticity for brass = 103 GN/m2

            Coefficient of linear expansion for steel = 11 x 10-6 m/°C

            Coefficient of linear expansion for brass = 19 x 10-6 m/°C
