Nested designs apply a hierarchy in which some level combinations are not studied because the levels cannot be duplicated or reused.

While applying nested design consider a random factors are nested within the fixed factor (drug) for measuring noise due to individual mice and cells and to generalize the effects of the fixed factor on all mice and cells.

(b)

Nested design, each subject receives one, and only one, treatment condition.

Crossover trials can be used to investigate chronic conditions, such as asthma, where the objective is to investigate the participants' short term response to therapy.
