why increase volume of sedimentation basin can increase effectiveness of a sedimentation

Answer #1

Sedimentation is a physical process used for water treatment by gravity to remove suspended solids from the water. In this sedimentation tank, water is entered at inlet which flow towards outlet with some velocity and during this time the particles which are heavier in weight settles at bottom of tank but rest of the particles remains in suspension which are lighter . So, when the volume of sedimentation basin is increases the flow through period of water containing suspended solids is increases which means water take more time to flow toward outlet . Due to which lighter particles also starts settle at bottom of tank and hence efficiency of tank or basin is increased. So, due to which effectiveness of basin is increased.

A countercurrent lamella settler module is to be installed in a conventional sedimentation tank that is 19m long, 3m wide, 3.4m deep. The flow through the basin is 500m^3/h. The settler module's lamella area 1.3m long, spaced at 5cm intervals, and inclined at 45 degrees. The module will occupy 50% of the tank surface area sp that the resulting velocity through the channels is 15m/h. Find the critical settling velocity of the lamella settler, and compare it to the overflow...

11.24 Calculate the dimensions of a launder around the periphery of a 10.0 m-radius sedimentation basin. A critical flow condition exists at the outlet end of the launder. The design flow for this basin is 5000 m3/d. Assume that the channel width is 300 mm and that the flow will divide equally around the two halves of the basin. The launder is made with smooth concrete.
